Dr. Gilliland was born in Dallas, Texas and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. After pursuing an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Baylor University, He attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He graduated at the top of his class and became a member of Alpha Omega Alpha – Honor Medical Society. His training continued at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas in an Internal Medicine internship followed by an Ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He is currently board certified in Ophthalmology. Dr. Gilliland then completed a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center where he was voted as the best teaching faculty member.
Currently, Dr. Gilliland is an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and an attending physician at Baylor Medical Center. He is also on staff at several other local hospitals and was one of the team physicians for the DALLAS STARS NHL hockey team for over 15 years. In addition, Dr. Gilliland has been a team physician for the DALLAS MAVERICKS NBA basketball team. Dr. Gilliland has been a ring side physician for the Real Estate Council’s FIGHT NIGHT and the Petroleum Club’s FIGHT NIGHT charity events for the last 15 years. Because of the extensive experience he has gained in Sports Ophthalmology, Dr. Gilliland is recognized as a leader in Sports related Ophthalmic Injuries.
Dr. Gilliland is actively engaged in teaching residents in Oral & Maxillofacial surgery, Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine and Plastic surgery at Baylor Medical Center and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Gilliland has published numerous articles in leading medical journals and written chapters on several different topics in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in several leading medical textbooks and online reference journals.
Dr. Gilliland has been picked as one of D MAGAZINE’S top doctors for several years, one of America’s TOP OPHTHALMOLOGISTS by the Consumer’s Research Council of America, one of TEXAS MONTHLY’S SUPER DOCTORS for numerous years and as one of THE BEST DOCTORS IN AMERICA by Woodward/White Publications. Working with several leading medical technology companies, Dr. Gilliland has pioneered the use of IMAGE GUIDED SURGERY as it applies to orbital disease. He has written the reference monograph for this technology as it applies to orbital diseases.
Furthermore, Dr. Gilliland has developed a new surgical technique for the rehabilitation of thyroid eye disease and for small incision minimally invasive orbitotomies. He was the first to perform these techniques in the United States. Dr. Gilliland is a fellow of the AMERICAN SOCIETY OF OPHTHALMIC PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY and the AMERICAN ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY.
In addition, Dr. Gilliland is active and on the board of directors of the LEAP Foundation – a non-profit charity which provides free medical and surgical services to underprivileged children in third world countries. Recently, he received an achievement award for his charitable service with the LEAP Foundation.
In his free time, Dr. Gilliland enjoys spending time with his wife and two children and is actively involved in school activities with his children. He is a member of Northwest Bible Church and enjoys hunting, fishing, running and woodworking.
